Stargate

Brussels Airport’s Stargate project will work with a consortium of 21 partners, including VIL, to make aviation and airports more environmentally friendly and sustainable.

status: Running | theme: Green Supply Chains | type: European

Stargate includes around thirty small and large projects focused on three main areas:

  • further decarbonization of the airport operations
  • improving the local environmental quality
  • improving the modal split

The Stargate project has been awarded 24.8 million euros in grants as part of the European Green Deal, reflecting the need to carry out these projects in the coming years.

Specific activities

The focus on decarbonization will center around electric taxiing, electric ground-handling equipment, and ground-handling materials powered by hydrogen. Additionally, Brussels Airport will construct a biofuel blending installation on-site, making it the first airport to blend kerosene with biofuel. This will enable a systematic increase in the use of biofuel. To increase the supply of renewable energy, we will explore partnerships with neighbouring municipalities. For local environmental quality, we will concentrate on refining existing techniques and innovating new ones, such as improving flight efficiency through green landings, a technique that reduces fuel consumption, emissions, and noise. Lastly, Stargate seeks to enhance mobility on and around airports by promoting alternatives to car transportation.
