Bicycle Logistics XXL

Taking bicycle logistics to a new level is the ambition of this new VIL project. To this end, the new, larger types of bicycles and trailers are being examined, which are also suitable for pallet transport. In addition, adapted (network) structures can facilitate processing larger volumes. For which flows can these new types of cargo bikes be used? And how can they be integrated into existing logistics flows?

status: In preparation | theme: Green Supply Chains | type: European

Bicycle logistics have become an integral part of certain logistics flows. Especially in an urban environment, where they enable the greenification of urban logistics. ‘Classic’ logistics service providers and shippers also recognize these opportunities and increasingly cooperate with bicycle logistics companies. The use of city hubs is also an important factor in taking bicycle logistics to the next level.

Opportunities

This project allows participants, together with VIL and its research partners (BCLF, UAntwerpen and AP Hogeschool):

  • To discover the latest technological innovations in the field of bicycle logistics XXL
  • Why these are or are not practically useful and economically feasible
  • How bicycle logistics XXL can be tackled within an existing business model
  • How all of the above can elevate bicycle logistics to a new level by handling larger volumes.

Specific activities

  • Inventory and categorize available XXL solutions, including best practices
  • Stakeholder survey with the aim of identifying needs/requirements/opportunities
  • Outline an operational model with:
    • Deployment matrix by type of goods and flow of goods: which bikes for which applications?
    • Listing of preconditions and qualitative aspects (e.g. legal aspects, congestion sensitivity, …)
    • Visualization of the workflow (e.g. urban fringe hub, micro hubs, mobile hubs, …)
  • Development of a TCO tool that also compares with the cost of delivery via an electric van
  • Pilot projects: validation of the operational model in practice

Practical

Start: October 2024
End: September 2026

Target group

This project focuses primarily on logistics and distribution companies (e.g., hospitality, construction, facilities, packages,…), but equally on shippers, web shops and retailers.
Refrigerated product flows are included in the scope of the project. Experience with bicycle logistics is not a requirement.
Cities are also part of the target group, as are bicycle manufacturers and distributors of XXL solutions.
