STRAP – LeSs TRAnsport Packaging
Helping companies avoid or minimize the use of transport packaging throughout the logistics chain, that is the goal of this VIL project. VIL actively explores innovative solutions and evaluates them against functional, sustainability, and legal requirements. Reuse of transport packaging plays a key role in this approach.

Many companies are increasingly exploring more sustainable packaging solutions. This shift is driven by various factors, including their own sustainability goals, growing customer expectations, and upcoming regulatory requirements such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Additionally, the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is expected to significantly influence how products are packaged and shipped across the European Union.
With the STRAP project, VIL aims to support companies in this transition. For many businesses, the exact impact of regulations such as the PPWR remains unclear, and the feasibility of alternative solutions is still uncertain.
Opportunities
This project allows participants to work alongside VIL and its research partners (IBE-BVI and Valipac) to:
- Gain insights into the legal framework and ESG objectives.
- Identify potential solutions for avoiding or reducing the use of single-use pallets, shrink film, strapping bands, and big bags.
- Validate the functional requirements of selected solutions in a lab setting, followed by real-world testing.
- Build argumentation and leverage points to convince other stakeholders in the value chain to adopt the identified alternatives.
Activities
- Map the legal framework and ESG objectives.
- Conduct a stakeholder survey to identify needs, requirements, and opportunities.
- Identify and categorize available solutions, including relevant best practices.
- Select the most promising solutions.
- Test the selected solutions in a lab environment.
- Validate the lab-approved solutions through pilot projects in real-life settings with project participants.
- Perform a financial analysis of the validated solutions, including ROI assessment.
- Define key arguments and leverage points for broader implementation.
