NAFT
The future of freight transport: which alternative fuels should you choose?
The NAFT project offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of road transport. The question is no longer whether, but which alternative fuels will replace conventional diesel. In collaboration with VIL, participating companies discover the best options to make their transport more sustainable and make strategic choices that are future-proof.

The transport sector is facing a crucial transition towards ‘zero emissions’ by 2050. Electrification is just one of the solutions, but many other alternatives, such as hydrogen, HVO, biodiesel, bio-LNG, and e-diesel, need to be considered as well. The NAFT project helps companies navigate this rapidly evolving market and determine the best course of action.
What does NAFT offer?
NAFT supports companies in exploring, analyzing, and evaluating alternative fuels through six key pillars:
- Overview of available fuels: Inventory of existing and emerging fuels, including practical considerations.
- Review of legislation and policy: Insights into relevant EU directives and national regulations that influence investment decisions.
- Industry perspectives: Future plans and developments of truck manufacturers and fuel suppliers.
- Strategic framework: A flexible and up-to-date model that helps companies make well-informed decisions.
- Scenario analysis: Assessment of potential future scenarios and their impact on business strategies.
- Investment decision toolkit: Practical toolkit for calculating ROI and TCO to optimize the financial feasibility of fuel choices.
Target audience
The NAFT project is ideal for all companies active in road transport, including transporters, shippers, financial institutions, vehicle manufacturers, fuel suppliers and infrastructure providers such as fuel stations.
Since this project is primarily funded through the budget that VLAIO has allocated for VIL projects, participation is exclusively reserved for VIL members.
Time commitment
The project implementation is handled by the project team, which means that the time investment on behalf of the participants is limited to approximately five days. This includes participation in workshops and thematic sessions.
